Xbox has officially announced that the highly anticipated reboot of Fable is being delayed. Instead of launching in late 2026 as originally expected, the game will now be released in February 2027.

Xbox shared this update on X, explaining that the late 2026 holiday season is simply too crowded with massive video games. To make sure Fable gets the attention it deserves, the company chose to give it a completely clear release window.

A Packed 2026 Lineup

The end of 2026 is shaping up to be one of the busiest periods in gaming history. Xbox players already have a massive list of titles to look forward to, including:

Halo: Campaign Evolved

– Gears of War: E-Day

– Minecraft Dungeons II

– Control Resonant

– Star Wars: Galactic Racer

– Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4

However, the main reason for the change in release schedule is likely to be Rockstar’s upcoming blockbuster project — Grand Theft Auto VI, which is scheduled for release in November 2026. Industry experts agree that the decision not to compete with GTA 6 is a sensible strategic move that will prevent Fable from being overshadowed.

Xbox Insists the Game is in "Great Shape"

Some fans worried that the delay meant the action RPG was facing development issues. However, Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty cleared up these concerns on the Official Xbox Podcast.

“The game is in great shape. The team feels really good,” Booty explained during the broadcast. He noted that the delay is purely a commercial decision, as the developers want to ensure the game gets “its own moment to shine”.

The game’s developer, Playground Games, is also on a roll at the moment. Earlier this month, they successfully launched Forza Horizon 6, which quickly attracted over 6 million players. Following the official release of the racing game, the studio can now focus on polishing Fable in peace until early 2027.

New Gameplay Reveal Coming on June 7

Players won’t have to wait until 2027 to find out how development is progressing. Xbox has confirmed that it will reveal new details about the Fable game during the Xbox Games Showcase, which takes place on Sunday 7 June at 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET. The event will also feature a special in-depth look at the technical systems underpinning Gears of War: E-Day, as well as full details on the platforms the game is set to be released on.
