This week, the gaming industry was taken by surprise by a series of shocking announcements about the future of Xbox’s first-party studios. Just two weeks after a triumphant Xbox Games Showcase featuring the surprise reveal of Senua (Hellblade 3), reports from Game File and The Verge indicate that Microsoft had already planned to end its partnership with the studio even before the trailer was released.
Here is a breakdown of the developing situation and what it means for the future of Ninja Theory.
What Lies Ahead for Senua?
According to reports, ahead of the presentation, Ninja Theory suspended work on its experimental horror project “Project Mara” in order to focus 100% of the developers’ efforts on “Senua.” Although the game was originally scheduled for release in 2027, sudden reports of the studio’s possible breakup or closure leave the fate of “Hellblade 3” completely uncertain. Large-scale layoffs and restructuring across the entire Xbox portfolio are expected to be completed early next month.
